Tonsil Stone Bothering You?
An individual’s tonsils are gland-like tissues in the rear of your throat. You have a tonsil located in a pocket on either side of your mouth. Tonsils are created from tissues which contain lymphocytes – cells in the body that fight off infections. Medical experts think that the tonsils play a role in the immunity process and are made to work like nets, capturing newly arriving bacteria and virus contaminants that are moving through your throat. When tonsils end up being extremely enlarged or inflamed (tonsillitis), they might need to be surgically removed. A tonsil stone (known as a tonsillolith, tonsillar debris, or calculus of the tonsil) is a chunk, or more commonly a group, of calcareous matter that forms in the back of the mouth within the crevices (or tonsillar crypts) of the tonsils or in the top of the mouth. Protruding tonsil stones have the feel of a foreign thing stuck at the back of the throat. They may be an especially irritating nuisance but are not often hazardous. Tonsils are loaded with crevices where bacteria and other material, together with dead cells and mucous, can become caught. If this happens, the debris may become concentrated in light colored structures that exist in the tonsil pockets.
