The Way to Decrease Teen Acne by Taking Preventive Measures
It’s an exceptional young person who will not get acne during their adolescent years. It’s changing hormones over the teen years that makes acne nearly universal. To reduce acne you should know why you get acne.
Acne results from plugged pores. An oily compound called sebum is produced by glands below the surface of your skin. This sebum rises to your skin’s surface through pores.
Your skin sheds old cells and replaces them with new cells. The oily sebum causes these old cells to clump together to block the pores.
These accumulating masses of oily dead skin particles finally start blocking or plugging up the pores a couple of weeks before they are large enough for you to observe. When this takes place the sebum that should rise to the surface is blocked and accumulates below the skin’s surface. Bacteria starts to multiply and an infection is under way.
As the sebum accumulates and the infection gets worse you start to finally see changes to your skin. Bumps start to enlarge until they become blackheads and whiteheads you recognize as pimples. This is acne.
Why does acne appear to be most widespread during the teenage years?
The major reason is hormonal changes. Young people, both male and female, start to produce testosterone. Testosterone results in a chemical reaction that causes the glands to produce additional sebum. It’s the additional oily sebum that make particle of dead skin clump together in the pores to block the free flow of sebum.
In the early twenties, young people have more capability to regulate the reaction testosterone has on sebum production. Less sebum causes less clumping of old cells and less probability for acne. Although adults can still get acne, their skin is drier and less elastic. Hence, the adult acne treatment will differ slightly from that for teenage acne.
What should be done during the period of excess sebum production to reduce the occurrence of acne?
The most effective thing is to keep the skin free of an overload of oils. You will have to cleanse the skin at least twice a day. Many people advocate a mild, non-alkaline cleanser as an alternative to normal soaps.
Choose your food carefully. Steer clear of foods that you notice cause you face to feel oily. Those foods are not good for you. Eat unprocessed foods like vegetables, fruits, meats, whole grain breads, as well as dairy products. Avoid manufactured foods with a lot of sugar or high fructose corn syrup.
Stress can produce additional hormones that aggravate acne. Learn to manage stress through exercise to help work off daily stress.
Avoid putting oily creams or makeup on your skin. These just help to increase the oils already on your skin as well as particles that help block your pores.
