The FDA And The State Of DePuy’s Hip Recalled Implants
A lot of patients who used the hip implants that were manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics were required to undergo a second surgery. Despite the hip implant’s guarantee to last up to fifteen years, this thing happened only after using the implant for a few years. A DePuy hip implant recall happened because this has affected around 93, 000 individuals. The recall happened voluntarily despite it happening late.
Johnson & Johnson as the subsidiary of DePuy Orthopaedics released a statement on this issue. Most of what Johnson & Johnson said was that affected patients need not worry too much because their condition can all be treated by a revision surgery. This is the kind of situation that Johnson & Johnson wants its users to know but these users actually are in great danger. Johnson & Johnson failed to inform people regarding the danger of metallosis. When the metals used in the hip replacement implant gets in the person’s blood, metallosis happen. The releasing of metals on the blood when using a metal implant is always possible but the metals released are much larger in this case. This is carcinogenic and can have long term effects.
For a product to be available in the market, the government has to make its approval first. The Food and Drug Administration holds the responsibility to check for the product before giving its approval that it is ok to be sold to the public. This approval can happen after a series of trial to test for the quality of the product. If there are no dangers seen while the products were tested, the product can be bought by the public.
Allegations that accuses DePuy of already knowing that their implants were defective are making people angrier. These products have actually passed through the hands of the FDA. But these products went through a process were only a couple of them were sent to trials because they were believed to be at par with the earlier set of products of the same manufacturer. Did the FDA knows about the state of DePuy’s hip recalled implants?
