Sinus Infection: Causes and Remedies

Anyone who has had a sinus infection can tell you that this is a very complicated and worrying disorder. Having sinusitis is like walking on a haze the whole day, in a bad way. The nasal passages are blocked so the person cannot breathe properly. The way a person talks becomes strangely muffled when he has sinusitis. The clogging is difficult to remedy because of the presence of thick mucus membranes that are inflamed. Sinusitis has several complications, including headaches and visual problems .

Sinus Infection Causes

Many factors could lead to the condition of sinus infection. The unusual weather can lead to clogged nose and sinus passages. Some people claim to get sinusitis after exposure to unclean air for a long time. There Allergen exposure may have led to colds, which got worse. People with autoimmune issues also show chronic sinusitis. Exposure to second hand smoke may also be related with chronic or recurring sinusitis.

When mucus cannot be flushed out naturally from maxillary sinuses (in the cheekbones), a person develops sinus problems. If infections and inflammation are present in the maxillary sinuses, the para nasal sinuses are greatly affected. Nasal cavities are interrelated with the other cavities on the face and infection in one means problems in others. Poor hearing is also a side effect of sinus infection because auditory sinuses are interrelated with those of the nose. The auditory cavities are linked with those in the nose.

Predisposition factors include allergies and the presence of abnormalities in the nasal cavity like nasal polyps. Snoring and frequent recurrence of sinus problems may be an indication that you have abnormalities. Mucus secretion becomes copious, leading to clogged nasal passages.

Suggested Remedies

Neti pot is a tool used for nasal irrigation. When a person undergoes nasal irrigation, he allows influx of water inside his sinuses leading to runny nose and de-clogging. Debris is flushed out as well.

A person can do this even without a neti pot. The key is to make sure the water can make contact with the mucus membranes inside the nasal passages. Mucus membranes inside the nose may be raw and irritated because of the frequent blowing. Alternatively, a saline nasal spray can be used.
