Researches were made on Zoloft and other antidepressants which made the FDA to give out a warning on these drugs. According to the article published on the March issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, the use of antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal ideations among children and young adolescents. Although no suicide attempts were made, the increase in suicide thoughts and ideations among the pediatric patients who were part of the study was observed. This result however is highly controversial in the medical community as some would continually refute the findings. Although the FDA required warnings on antidepressant labelling with regard to children and young adolescent use, the agency doesn’t forbid doctors to use it in pediatric patients. It is not advised to immediately stop the use of the drug as severe complications such as an Fosamax lawsuit may take place.
Suicide Ideations
Suicidal ideation is defined as wanting to take one’s life. Simply put, it means that you are thinking of committing suicide. Although this doesn’t include committing suicide per se, it is generally used as a term to pertain on the intent of committing suicide including the act on how to do it. Suicidal ideations can most often be a result of major depression and/or bipolar disorder. One should not ignore any individual who expresses a wish to die. Suicide ideations are classified into two which are the following:
• Active
This is serious because there is a current and active plan on committing suicide.
• Passive
The individual has expressed the desire to commit suicide but no plan has been made.
Suicidal ideations can also be a person’s call for help. If a person happens to verbalize suicidal thoughts and ideations, it is highly advised that he/she be taken to medical professionals who can help. By paying attention to a person in this situation, you might have actually saved a life.
Treatment for Suicide Ideations
Home treatment is not advised for people with major disorder or any other type of mental disorder. In worst cases, hospitalization is needed but the prescription of antidepressants such as Zoloft is often times made. Your physician will not prescribe you with a medication without considering the risks and benefits because side effects like Fosamax lawsuit can be very harmful to pregnant women and those of child bearing age. Also, since Zoloft may increase suicide ideations in pediatric patients, an alternative medication may be given.
