Cancer of the bowel is one of the leading cancers in the US today along with lung and breast cancer.

The tool used to perform a colonoscopy is a long, thin tube with a camera at the tip that’s inserted at the ass. This specific tool gives a high-spec image of the bowel as it is being passed thru and can also cut out polyps for biopsy. The gut is 6 to 8 feet long and the tool utilized in the colonoscopy runs throughout the entire length of the gut.

It’s been shown in medical proof that an abnormal gene can be passed from parent to kid for colon polyps and cancer of the colon. Cancer of the colon starts in the lining of the bowel in the cells contained there.

A growth that may come about in the bowel and other organs is referred to as a polyp. They seem like a mushroom or a dome shape and are essentially fleshy tumors that grow on the lining of the gut. The size varies and can range from the dimensions of a pea to the scale of a plum.

Colon polyps do start out as being benign but over time some polyps can become malignant. The larger the polyp is the more chance of cancer cells being present. These polyps are routinely discovered at the time a colonoscopy is performed and can be removed at that point safely and simply.

There are many factors that contribute to the chance of having colon cancer and these include Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, breast cancer history, being older then forty years, diet and western living, and family history of polyps or colon cancer.
