Can Dry Eye Impact Your Vision – John Hovanesian MD
Dry eye is a condition in which there are insufficient tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are essential for sustaining the well being from the front surface from the eye and for supplying clear vision. People with dry eyes either don’t create enough tears or have a poor high quality of tears. Dry eye is a common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults. With each blink from the eyelids, tears are spread across the front surface from the eye, known as the cornea. Tears offer lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter in the eye, and keep the surface from the eyes smooth and clear. Excess tears in the eyes flow into small drainage ducts, in the inner corners from the eyelids, which drain in the back from the nose. Dry eyes necessarily come from two types of tear problem. One is inadequate quantity of tears and poor high quality of tears.
In inadequate quantity of tears the tears are created by a number of glands in and around the eyelids. Tear production tends to diminish with age, with numerous medical circumstances, or as a side impact of particular medicines. Environmental circumstances like wind and dry climates may also affect tear volume by increasing tear evaporation. When the normal quantity of tear production decreases or tears evaporate too quickly from the eyes, symptoms of dry eye can develop. In Poor high quality of tears the tears are made up of three layers of oil, water, and mucus. Every component serves a function in protecting and nourishing the front surface from the eye. A smooth oil layer helps to prevent evaporation from the water layer, whilst the soft layer functions in spreading the tears evenly over the surface from the eye. If the tears evaporate too quickly or don’t spread evenly over the cornea because of issues with any from the three tear layers, dry eye symptoms can develop.
Probably the most common form of dry eyes is because of an inadequate quantity of the water layer of tears. People with dry eyes might expertise symptoms of irritated, gritty, scratchy, or burning eyes, a feeling of something in their eyes.
